At my insistence, I asked my husband and sons to plant a garden. After a trip to the local warehouse store, we got everything we needed to plant 5 different vegetables. It was a lot of work, but a great learning experience for the kids. They had never gardened before and only knew from books how a plant grew. With the help of their Dad, they measured out the area and spaced and planted the seeds. They learned so much about measurement and hard work (the Arizona soil is very hard and had to be loosened) that first day. Only a week later after watering and lots of sunshine the seedlings popped through the soil. The boys were so excited to see their hard work pay off. How great that they can learn about plant life in their own back yard. Try gardening with your kids if you have the space or put some potted plants on your kitchen window sill.  Or you can visit nursery or a garden in your area.

After our Saturday sports, we went to Chick-Fil-A yesterday.  I don’t know if you have one in your area, but it is a fast food restaurant. Other than delicious food, the prize in the kid’s meal is quite different than at other chains. Instead of the plastic toys that will be lost in a day, the folks at Chick-Fil- A, strive to put educational toys or books in their kid meals. My boys received a sticker book of Aesop’s fables. They are interesting animal tales aimed at teaching children a moral lesson. Even, if there is not a Chick-Fil- A in your area, you can hit the library and check out the Aesop’s fables. Preschoolers love them and you can help explain the lesson behind the story.

The end of the school year is ending for many parents with older kids. Registration is starting already for kindergarten.

Those of us with children in the preschool ages need to start thinking about if they will be going to preschool. If you decide that you will not send your kids to formal preschool, there are a lot of individual classes that you can sign up for that can be tailored to your youngster’s personality.

If you think preschool is the best option, consider one that is play oriented.  Young children learn best when taught though play.

And whether you choose preschool or not, continue to read, play, talk, sing with your youngster. These are great ways for your child to learn.
